Update On June Summer Programming and Exploration Camps

Throughout the spring of 2020, we have become accustomed to changing plans. The closing of schools, stores, churches, and parks reminded us on a daily basis that life was no longer “normal.”

As we move into the summer months, we are beginning to realize that normal is not going to return as quickly as we had hoped. This applies to Roper Mountain Science Center just as it does the rest of our community.

As a result, based on current state-mandated social distancing recommendations, we are forced to cancel our planned camps and Starry Nights programs for the month of June. A decision for July camps will be made in the coming weeks, based on the latest guidance from the governor’s office.

We know that many of you went to great lengths to ensure your child’s registration was among the first for the camp of his/her choice. We share your disappointment that we will not be able to immerse your child in a world of science, innovation, wonder, and curiosity this June. Unfortunately, providing a safe experience in a hands-on learning environment is simply not possible at this time.

Registrations for June camps, will be refunded in full beginning on Monday, May 11. If you purchased your camp online using a credit card, your refund will be applied to the card you used to purchase your camps. We will be processing these refunds by camp, so if you have registered for more than one camp, you will see multiple refunds on your card (even if you purchased them all at one time).

If you purchased your camp using a cash or check, or onsite with any payment method including a credit card, we must issue your refund by check. These will be processed as quickly as possible and mailed to the address on your account.

While we remain hopeful that July’s camps will be able to continue as planned, we know many of you rely on RMSC camps for summer childcare and may need to make other plans. If this is the case and you’d like to cancel your July camp reservations, we must receive this request in writing. Please email Lisa Phillips at liphilli@greenville.k12.sc.us no later than Friday, May 8 and we will ensure your refund reflects all the summer camps for which your child was registered. Refund requests for July received after May 8th may be delayed by up to 2 weeks.

At this time, we would also like to give you the opportunity to invest in Roper Mountain Science Center and help ensure the continuation and expansion of our programs. Therefore, if you are willing and able to partner with us by donating all or a portion of your camp funds to Roper Mountain, you will greatly contribute to our continued work of offering world-class, student-centered and family-friendly experiences for our community and our schools. If you would like to do so, please indicate the donated amount to Lisa Phillips at liphilli@greenville.k12.sc.us so that we can process your tax-deductible gift.

Throughout the summer, we will continue to follow guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and directions from our elected leaders. Nothing thrills us more than the sound of the Mountain when it is packed with children, enthusiastic about learning the next great thing. We will get back there, but we want to make sure we do it in a responsible and safe manner for everyone.

We appreciate your support and look forward to future opportunities to be a pinnacle of innovative learning, an engine for community engagement, and a national leader in science education.
