Science on Wheels — Virtual Science on Wheels

Outreach logo

These programs were designed to provide engaging science content while minimizing person to person interaction so we can all be safe and enjoy Roper Mountain programming at the same time. These programs are designed to be booked by a single organization and can be delivered either with a single connection (point to point) where both the instructor and participants use video and audio, or multipoint where many individuals connect from different locations. In that case only the presenter will use video and audio and the audience members will communicate via text chat. Participants must provide a computer, viewing screen, speakers, camera and microphone if using a single point connection, and must have the free Zoom software installed on the computer.

To request one of these programs, please email the Outreach Specialist, Jennifer Romatelli.

Choose from the following program options:

Virtual Star Talk:

Connect live with a roper mountain astronomer who will use the Stellarium software to do a live star talk about the current night sky. Bookers may request astronomy related topics for what content will be covered in the star talk. After the talk a link will be provided to participants to watch one of 12 fulldome planetarium shows modified for viewing on a flat screen. The booker will be able to choose their preferred show from the list.

Available Planetarium Shows

Virtual Science on Wheels Assembly:

Your participants will be able to watch a live science presentation by a Roper Mountain instructor.
Program length: 45 minutes plus additional time for Q and A
Price: $125 for one session, $50 for each additional session in the same day of the same program

Assembly options:

Science Magic:

Sometimes science demonstrations can seem like magic. The difference is, scientists love to explain how things work! Your educator will perform several demonstrations that may first seem like magic. Then with the help of observations from the audience we will figure out the science behind the trick, and learn what is really happening.

Chemical Capers:

This fast paced assembly explores chemicals and chemical reactions in our world! What are they? How do they happen? And what are the results? Participants will investigate these questions as we demonstrate several exciting chemical reactions.

Super Cold Science:

In this supercool lesson we will use liquid nitrogen to show how solids, liquids and gases are affected by extreme changes in temperature. Participants will learn how water is different from most other materials and watch the properties of materials change before their eyes.
